Support Services Training

The department consists of:

All three team members work x departmentally throughout Support Services. This means we co-ordinate and deliver in-house training for approximately 150 staff.

The company as a whole and the Support Service Department have a strong commitment to ongoing staff training. In Support Services this begins with induction at the onset of employment then with a continuous programme of training and development throughout a person’s career path.

We have accreditation from City & Guilds for the delivery of LDAF (Learning Disabilities Award Framework) Induction/Foundation Level 2. The award is in “Working with People who have Learning Disabilities”. Each newly recruited member of staff, if they have no qualification in Learning Disability will complete this training in the first 6 months of their employment in line with government legislation. Once they have completed this award they will be given the chance to consolidate their learning and develop new skills before registering for an NVQ Award.

Every member of staff, new and existing will be given the opportunity to work towards and complete an NVQ relevant to their job role. The department has a strategy to meet government targets through a rolling programme for NVQ awards.

We also offer a comprehensive programme of other relevant training some delivered in-house others purchased from outside training specialists.

Within the department we can provide specialist training. Lorraine is a Regional Makaton Tutor/Trainer. Makaton is a communication method useful for people with learning disabilities who have limited verbal communication skills. Pauline has a Diploma in Supported Employment and specialises in “Structured Training” a training technique based on “Systematic Instruction”, a particularly powerful and effective training tool to use with people with learning disabilities.

Structured Training Workshops have been established across Support Services to equip support staff teaching service users everyday and work skills. There is also a strategy to develop Makaton skills across the departments and Lynn Atkinson a team leader within the Supported Living department, has received training to assist with this. These skills are not only useful for Support Services but can be taught and used across the whole of the organisation.

The Support Services also utilise Widgit, a symbol based form of communication which has its foundations in Makaton. Lorraine plays an important role in the training and utilisation of this communication system.

We will also be looking for opportunities to market training in Makaton, Structured Training and LDAF Induction/Foundation in the near future.

If you have any enquiries regarding training, please do not hesitate to contact any of the training team who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
